Backing up Windows 11 to an external drive can mean two different things: keeping recoverable versions of personal files, or creating an image that can rebuild Windows after a serious failure. Decide which recovery problem you are solving before clicking through a wizard.
Choose the backup type first

1. Prepare the external drive
- Choose a drive with enough free space for the data you intend to protect plus future versions.
- Copy off anything already stored on it before changing its format or using a backup cleanup feature.
- Connect it directly to the PC for the first job, avoiding an unreliable hub.
- Open Disk Management and identify it by model and capacity. Give it a clear volume label such as PC-BACKUP.
- Record whether BitLocker or another encryption method protects the drive and store the recovery information separately.
2. Use File History for versioned personal files
File History remains available through Control Panel in Windows 11. Open Control Panel > System and Security > File History, select the external drive, and turn the feature on. Run the first backup manually, then review the excluded folders and retention settings.
Do not assume every folder on the PC is included. Confirm the libraries and user folders that matter, then restore a small file to a temporary folder. Microsoft's current guidance also notes that a disconnected File History drive must be reconnected before scheduled protection can continue.
3. Use an image for broader recovery
An image-capable tool can capture Windows-related partitions or the complete system disk into an image file on the external drive. Choose Disk Backup if a separate data partition on the same source disk must be part of the image.
- Select the source by disk model, capacity, and partition layout.
- Select a folder on the external drive as the destination.
- Use a descriptive task name and note the date and PC.
- Start with the default intelligent-sector option unless you specifically require every sector.
- Let the first full backup complete without unplugging or sleeping the external drive.
4. Verify before disconnecting
- Check the job log and confirm the newest image file exists on the external drive.
- Use the application's image-check function when available.
- Restore two or three nonessential files to a new temporary folder and open them.
- Create rescue media and confirm it can see both the internal disk and the backup image without starting a restore.
- Eject and disconnect the drive when it is not actively backing up.
5. Keep the drive from filling silently
Estimate how many recovery points fit before relying on a schedule. A full image plus several incremental or differential images can grow quickly. Review free space monthly. If you enable automatic cleanup, understand whether it deletes individual backups or complete backup chains; never delete one file from the middle of an incremental chain manually.
