A full system backup is an image of the Windows partitions needed to recover the operating system, installed applications, settings, and files captured at that moment. It solves a different problem from Windows Backup, which primarily syncs selected folders and remembers settings through a personal Microsoft account.
1. Decide what recovery result you need
Choose a system image when you want to rebuild the current Windows installation after a failed drive or severe software problem. Choose a file backup when you mainly need older versions of documents. For stronger protection, keep both: a system image for broad recovery and versioned file copies for everyday mistakes.
2. Prepare the destination and recovery information
- Use an external disk, NAS share, or other destination that is separate from the Windows disk.
- Confirm the destination has more free space than the used space reported for the system partitions.
- Save the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key somewhere you can access if Windows will not start.
- Give the backup a clear name that includes the PC and date.
- Keep the PC on reliable power until the first image completes.
3. Create the image in AOMEI Backupper
- Open AOMEI Backupper and choose Backup, then System Backup.
- Confirm the application has automatically selected the Windows boot and system-related partitions. Do not remove one simply because it lacks a drive letter.
- Select the separate destination drive or network path. Recheck its model, volume label, and available capacity.
- Open the backup options only for settings you understand. Compression can reduce storage use, while encryption requires you to preserve another password.
- If you create a schedule, choose a time when the destination is normally available. A schedule cannot succeed when an unplugged USB drive is required.
- Start the backup and record the completion status rather than assuming that creation of a file means the job succeeded.
AOMEI documents System Backup as selecting Windows and the system-related partitions automatically. A whole-disk image is broader: it also includes non-system partitions on that disk. Choose the latter only when those partitions are intentionally part of your recovery plan.
4. Verify the image without overwriting the PC
- Use the application's image-check function to inspect the image structure.
- Explore or mount the image if your edition supports it, then open several non-sensitive sample files.
- Restore a small folder to a new temporary location and compare the result with the original.
- Confirm you know which recovery media and backup destination would be needed if Windows stopped booting.
5. Create rescue media before you need it
An image on an external drive is less useful if a failed PC cannot start the restore environment. Create Windows PE bootable media, label it, and perform a non-destructive boot check. Inside the recovery environment, verify that the internal disk and backup destination are visible, then exit without beginning a restore.
6. Maintain more than one recovery point
Do not overwrite the only known-good image immediately after a major Windows update or storage change. Keep at least one earlier recovery point until the new image has been checked. Also keep irreplaceable personal files in another off-device or offline copy.
