Restoring a system image to a new SSD is different from cloning the old drive directly. You first create a recoverable image on separate storage, replace or connect the SSD, then use recovery media to write the image to the new destination.

Destructive boundary: the selected destination can be overwritten. Verify the new SSD by model and capacity, and preserve every file already on it before starting.

When image-and-restore is the better route

  • The replacement SSD cannot be connected at the same time as the old system drive.
  • You want a separate rollback image before opening the PC.
  • You need to restore the system later rather than copy drives in one session.
  • You want to keep the original disk untouched while the new SSD is verified.

1. Confirm the prerequisites

  1. Create the system image with the same application you will use to restore it. AOMEI's current documentation says its restore workflow expects an AOMEI-created image, not a Windows image or another vendor's format.
  2. Store the image on an external drive or network location that will remain accessible during recovery.
  3. Create and safely boot-test Windows PE recovery media before removing the working system drive.
  4. Check that the new SSD has enough capacity for the used partitions and the proposed destination layout.
  5. Save the BitLocker recovery key and suspend protection if your migration plan requires it.

2. Record the original layout

In Disk Management, record the source disk number, model, capacity, GPT or MBR partition style, and the EFI, recovery, Windows, and data partitions. Take a photo or screenshot that excludes sensitive file names. This record helps distinguish a missing boot partition from a simple drive-letter issue later.

3. Boot the recovery environment

Install the new SSD, connect the external backup drive, and boot from the tested recovery USB using the PC's one-time boot menu. Confirm that the environment can see the backup location and the new SSD. If the SSD is missing, stop and address storage-controller or WinPE driver support before selecting a restore destination.

4. Select the image and destination

  1. Open Restore and select the system-backup task or browse to its image file.
  2. Choose the complete system restore option rather than extracting individual files.
  3. Select the new SSD or its unallocated space as the new location.
  4. Enable SSD alignment when the summary offers it for an SSD destination.
  5. Use Universal Restore only when moving to materially different hardware and only after confirming the required paid edition.
  6. Review the summary one final time before starting.

5. Make the first boot clear

After restore, shut down, remove the recovery USB and external backup drive, and boot with only the intended new system disk available when practical. This prevents Windows from silently starting from the old disk. If firmware does not select the SSD automatically, use the one-time boot menu before changing multiple settings.

6. Verify before erasing anything

  • Confirm the Windows volume is physically located on the new SSD.
  • Restart twice and test sleep, wake, networking, and several applications.
  • Check activation, BitLocker status, Windows Update, and expected partitions.
  • Restore a sample file from the external image.
  • Keep the original drive and system image unchanged until the SSD has passed several normal work sessions.
