Unallocated space can exist on the same SSD as C and still be unusable by Windows Disk Management. For a basic disk, Microsoft requires that space to sit immediately after—visually, to the right of—the volume you want to extend.
Start by reading the complete disk row
Open Disk Management and read the lower pane from left to right. Confirm that C and the unallocated space are on the same numbered physical disk. A drive letter does not tell you which physical disk holds the volume.
Adjacent space
Windows may workC touches the empty space on its right. The basic layout requirement is present.
Non-adjacent space
Blocked in WindowsD separates C from the empty space, so Disk Management cannot extend C across it.
Why shrinking D usually does not solve it
Suppose the layout is C | D | Unallocated. Shrinking D with Disk Management normally removes space from the right side of D. The result is still C | smaller D | more Unallocated. D remains between C and the empty area, so the Extend Volume option for C stays unavailable.
The same problem occurs with C | Recovery | Unallocated. The recovery partition breaks adjacency even though it may be small.
Your options, from least disruptive to most disruptive

What “move unallocated space” really means
Unallocated space is not a file you can drag across the disk. To turn C | D | Unallocated into C | Unallocated | D, software must move D toward the end of the disk and update the partition boundaries. If D contains a large amount of data, that can be a substantial storage operation.
MiniTool's current Move/Resize documentation says the feature can move a partition toward adjacent unallocated space and can position unallocated space beside the partition that needs to grow. Its interface records proposed changes first and applies them only after the user selects Apply. That preview is useful, but it is not a substitute for a backup.
Prepare before any move or resize
- Back up important files to another physical device. A copy on D does not protect you while D itself is being moved.
- Save the BitLocker recovery key. MiniTool's current help page says BitLocker-encrypted partitions are not supported by Move/Resize and advises disabling encryption before resizing, then restarting. Do not change encryption until the backup and recovery key are confirmed.
- Check disk health. Do not begin a large data-moving operation on a drive that disconnects, reports errors, or behaves unpredictably.
- Identify every partition. Record EFI, MSR, recovery, OEM, Windows, and data partitions before deciding what may move.
- Use reliable power. Connect a laptop charger and avoid starting the operation when a forced shutdown or update is likely.
- Prepare recovery media. Know how you would reach Windows recovery and where the BitLocker key and backup are stored.
How to evaluate MiniTool for this layout
Before applying anything, confirm the current edition recognizes the correct physical disk, shows the expected left-to-right layout, and offers a documented Move/Resize or Extend operation for the relevant file system. Read the pending-operation list as a destructive checklist: which partition moves, which partition grows, and whether a restart or bootable environment is required.

- Restart Windows twice and confirm it boots from the expected physical disk.
- Open Disk Management and compare every partition with the planned final layout.
- Open representative files from any partition that moved.
- Check BitLocker or device-encryption status and make sure the saved recovery key still matches the device.
- Keep the external backup unchanged until several normal work sessions have passed.
Bottom line
If unallocated space is not next to C, Windows is not overlooking it—the layout does not meet Disk Management's extension rule. The safest answer may be to leave the partitions alone, use the space as a separate volume, or reduce what C stores. Moving a partition is a valid documented option, but it should be treated as a planned storage operation with a verified backup, not as a quick drag-and-drop fix.
