When the C drive is nearly full, it is tempting to delete the first large folder you find or immediately resize a partition. Start by finding out what is actually using the space. In many cases, the safer fix is removing or moving files you recognize rather than changing the disk layout.
1. See where the space went
Open Settings > System > Storage. Write down the drive's total capacity and free space, then open the largest categories. The category totals point you in the right direction, but they are not a list of files that are automatically safe to delete.
Take a screenshot or note the starting free-space figure. Without a baseline, it is easy to spend an hour cleaning and still not know which step made a difference.
2. Start with files you recognize
- Open the Recycle Bin and check its contents before emptying it.
- Review Temporary files in Windows Storage settings. Read each category before selecting it, especially Downloads.
- Sort installed apps by size and uninstall only software you recognize and no longer need.
- Review Downloads manually. Old installers, ISO files, and ZIP archives are common space users, but the folder may also contain documents you meant to keep.
- Move large personal videos or archives to a separate drive or cloud location, open a few of the moved files, and only then remove the originals.
3. Leave system folders alone
Do not bulk-delete files from Windows, Program Files, ProgramData, or AppData. A folder can look old or strangely named and still be required by Windows, an installed application, or your user profile. Use the application's own cleanup or uninstall controls when possible.
4. Find out why the drive keeps filling
If the free space disappears again, cleanup is treating the symptom. Look for a repeating source:
- a cloud folder set to keep everything available offline;
- a game library or video-editing cache stored on C;
- repeated phone or camera imports;
- old virtual machines, disk images, or download archives; or
- a backup job writing its copies to the same physical disk.
5. Resize a partition only when the layout supports it
Making C larger can help when another partition on the same physical disk has space you can genuinely spare. It will not fix an application that keeps creating new data. Before resizing, open Disk Management and identify the physical disk, the order of its partitions, and whether BitLocker or device encryption is enabled. Back up important files and save the recovery key before making a layout change.

Restart the PC and compare the new free-space figure with your baseline. Open several files you moved and launch any application whose cache or storage location you changed. If you resized a partition, return to Disk Management and confirm that every expected volume is present and has the intended capacity.
