Disk Clone and System Clone are both migration tools, but they copy different scopes. The correct choice depends on whether you want every partition from the source disk or only the partitions required to run Windows.

Destination warning: cloning overwrites the selected destination. Back up its files first, then identify both drives by model and capacity—not by a drive letter alone.

Choose Disk Clone when all source partitions belong on the SSD

Disk Clone is usually the clearer choice when Windows, applications, personal data, and the vendor recovery layout all live on one drive and the new SSD has enough usable capacity. It preserves the relationship between those partitions instead of asking you to decide which ones are boot-critical.

Choose System Clone when only Windows should move

System Clone is useful when the source disk contains a separate large data partition that should remain where it is, or when Windows is moving to a smaller SSD that can hold the system partitions but not every file on the disk. You still need a separate plan for data outside the selected system scope.

Use this decision checklist

  1. Open Disk Management and map every partition on the source disk.
  2. Write down which partition contains Windows, applications, personal files, and manufacturer recovery tools.
  3. Compare the used space that must move with the destination's actual capacity.
  4. Check whether the source is Basic or Dynamic and whether it uses GPT or MBR.
  5. Record BitLocker status and save the recovery key before changing the boot layout.
  6. Select Disk Clone only if the whole disk is the intended scope; otherwise evaluate System Clone or image-and-restore.

When neither clone is the safest first move

If the source disk reports read errors, disappears intermittently, or contains a layout you cannot explain, repeated cloning attempts can increase risk. Create a separate backup or image first where practical, and get expert help for a physically failing drive. For a clean reinstall, migrating only personal files may also produce a simpler result than copying years of accumulated software problems.

Verify before reusing the old disk

After cloning, boot with the new SSD selected and without depending on the old Windows drive. Restart at least once, open representative files and applications, check Disk Management, confirm encryption, and keep the original unchanged until normal use has proved the new setup.
